Guided Exploration
The Hundertwasser Art Centre celebrates Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s lived vision - a life in harmony with nature and with individual creativity - alongside world class contemporary Māori art. We are uniquely able to meet a wide range of learning intentions for schools across most of the learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum.
Inspired by Hundertwasser and the shared synergies with te ao Māori - we are excited to introduce a multi-disciplinary, horizon-expanding experience, encompassing themes of art, identity, architecture and ecology, aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, the new Aotearoa Histories Curriculum and your local curriculum and reflecting some of today’s most pressing global concerns.
We tailor every experience to the unique needs of your class to create engaging, meaningful and customised learning experiences for your students.
For one time visits we recommend organising either:

Access to this world class destination is central to our kaupapa. Schools or groups that experience barriers to visiting, financial or otherwise, are encouraged to get in touch and together we will try and find a solution.

The Experience
The Hundertwasser Art Centre provides a rare opportunity to experience Hundertwasser's creative and environmental vision alongside world class contemporary Māori art. And all under one afforested and golden-domed roof!
Together, we can customise your experience by focusing our themes to your learning outcomes and student needs. Students will have the chance to explore the key themes of art, identity, architecture and ecology which underpin Hundertwasser’s work - and how they relate to themselves and contemporary society. In addition, they will explore the unique themes from each new Wairau exhibition. Find out what’s on the link below.
With the support of our Arts Facilitator, students will strengthen their visual literacy - deepening their observation, collaboration, communication and critical-thinking skills along the way.

Hundertwasser Online
Delivered remotely through Teams Virtual Meeting Platform, we are offering the opportunity to explore the amazing Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery from the comfort of your classroom. Encounter fascinating art works and discuss new concepts and ideas on our discursive journey, about a life in harmony with nature and how a dreamer can change the world. Get to know Hundertwasser, the many facets of his personality, art and philosophy and take advantage of the opportunity to interview our Arts Facilitator with any questions that you may have; large or small.
This opportunity is best aligned to level three and above of the curriculum and runs for about 45 mins. Make sure that your microphone is working well because this is not a static lecture, but instead contains many conversations, reflections and the chance for your learner’s own ideas to lead the discussion.
Pre and post support is available to teachers planning longer units of work, so please get in touch to discuss your plans and learning intentions, and how we can help to bring the learning to life.
