Explore and contrast a wide range of art styles including critically acclaimed Māori artworks In this tour across 3 venues: The Wairau Māori Art Gallery, Hundertwasser in New Zealand Exhibition and Whangarei Art Museum. Students will have the chance to explore artworks and make meaning, contrast differing approaches to art and understand how ahurea taukiri, perspectives, values and whakapapa are manifested and expressed through art. In this experience you will encounter a wide variety of artistic styles including Toi Tūturu, Toi Whakawhiti and Toi Rereke across a diverse group of artists of national and international significance.
Students will be encouraged to engage in rich discussion, explore their own personal feelings and responses to artworks, and meet with big ideas from across the curriculum. They will be encouraged to sketch, take notes and photograph artworks which can contribute to their assessments. For students who have visited a traditional wharenui as a part of their research, the Hundertwasser Art Centre building can create an excellent point of contrast, rich in meaning and ideology built upon a fascinating response to a western history context. Other fantastic points of learning which are always available include the pou whakairo Te Pou Tāhuhu a Kūkupa by Chris Bailey which connects to the history of the local rohe, Hundertwasser’s use of natural pigments and recycles materials in painting, complex lithographic prints and Japanese Woodcut artworks. It is also possible to visit artworks in the Whangārei Art Museum Collection. Get in touch to be connected to specific artworks matched to your particular needs and learning intentions.
This experience can be extended to include an art workshop to expand upon their learning and create opportunities for diversity in art practice. Get in touch to find out more about the options currently available. Please keep in mind that the exhibitions in the Wairau Māori Art Gallery and Whangārei Art Museum change every few months so make sure to enquire about the themes and potential learning available at the time of your visit.
