This sculpture commemorates and celebrates conservation efforts to fight kauri dieback. The work also acknowledges the significance the Northland region has, representing in spirit the mighty kauri Tane Mahuta and Tane Moana connecting the west coast to the east coast.
The kauri tree has important values for Aotearoa’s new evolving culture, with its preservation and wellbeing it is a legacy for future generations. It too resonates with Maoridom, the strong ties in cultural beliefs and connections in Māori mythology.
The kauri stands with an awe-inspiring presence, a chiefly tree that exemplifies resilience and strength. It is seen as an iconic symbol for Te Tai Tokerau, Northland, Aotearoa New Zealand.
In the artist’s words “Our landscape is where the human and natural world connects, where humanity’s unique stories can be shared with profound and startling results.”
