Paul Harris
This sculpture is from a series of sculptures that Paul has been working on over the last few years where he is exploring the idea of totems as a story telling medium.
The totem of light tells the story of the makeup of a community. This community we experience on this land we call home.
“I’ve always used pattern in my work and the idea of a pattern consisting of many parts to create a cohesive whole, in this work, signifying community and the multi-cultural makeup of Aotearoa. The form of the totem, typically tall, straight and upright, has always signified strength and unity to me.”
“In this sculpture, I’ve added the element of light. This piece is hollow and is illuminated with a powerful light source from within. I wanted to portray the idea of being seen from a distance. This is how I imagine Aotearoa is seen from other countries and as a small island nation our community is important to us.
The strength and power in our community is at the core of this light sculpture.”
