Susan Dinkelacker
Carved from a solid piece of timber using a chainsaw and hand chisels, the baby ruru is gently held in a hand. This durable outdoor sculpture has a strong environmental message of caring for our native birds.
This artwork was inspired by the volunteer work done at the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre. Susan aspires to communicate her respect for the tireless work done by volunteers at the Centre to recover sick or injured birds.
“My passion for sculpting has led me on an exciting journey developing my own style of carving wood, and wax (for casting into bronze). I strive to give an uplifting experience to those who view my sculptures, which are predominantly of birds and the human form, (and) I'm intrigued by texture and enjoy taking extra time to create surface finishes which make my sculptures a pleasure to touch.”
